A successful career in real estate doesn’t just happen and rarely comes easily. Real estate sales are extremely demanding and a personal commitment to excellence is essential.

Those who enter the profession will travel a challenging road. Be prepared to invest time and money in a life-long learning exercise.

Completing required courses is just the beginning of a journey that requires continuing education to maintain your edge and professional credentials. The market is dynamic, legislation is constantly changing, and new technologies are continuously emerging. It’s no wonder that knowledge is power in the real estate marketplace.

Personal sacrifices are also a reality. In the heat of negotiations, most buyers and sellers have little regard for the time of day. Some practitioners point to long hours, high stress levels, and reduced social life. It’s also true that a career in real estate is anything but routine.

Still, successful people in the profession are the first to say it’s a matter of perspective and balance. Trade-offs must be made, but the personal freedom, a satisfying career, and the long-term benefits are well worth the effort.

Learning Options

The OREA Real Estate College ensures maximum flexibility in course options for students throughout the province. While some adult students prefer a classroom environment, others seek the world of self-directed learning.

Self-Directed

Self-directed courses allow individuals anywhere in Ontario to complete selected portions of the registration program at their convenience.

E-Learning

This approach to self-directed study is highly interactive. The course workbook is available via the Internet. Students must have some computer knowledge and feel comfortable with the hardware and software required to take an e-learning course. In addition, internet access is required (high speed is highly recommended) along with a word processing program.
E-learning demands self-discipline and good time management. While less time consuming than taking a course in person, this approach lacks the degree of social interaction found in the classroom. Course content is also delivered differently. You don’t simply read or listen to an instructor. Students define the learning experience, explore interactive links, and work through material by clicking, selecting, and entering. Assistance is available through the Instructor Support Line. Education forums are accessible by e-learning students directly from their online course.

E-learning courses feature mechanisms for self-testing and guides students through the course unit-by-unit. In addition to exercises, students must complete assignments. E-learning access begins on the date of enrolment and ends on the initially scheduled examination date. Examinations are held at College Examination Centres.

Correspondence

This traditional study method has guided countless professionals in their academic pursuits. Students review course material and complete exercises and assignments within the confines of their homes or offices. As with e-learning, commitment and self-motivation are musts. Education forums and the Instructor Support Line are available for assistance. Scheduled examinations are held at College Examination Centres.

Classroom

Students are expected to attend 100 percent of scheduled classroom hours. If attendance is less than 70 percent, you will not be permitted to write the final examination. The examination, written during the last three hours of the course, represents 100 percent of the final mark.

Classroom instruction is mandatory for selected courses or portions thereof, while optional in others. This approach provides maximum flexibility while ensuring that classroom participation is retained. Interaction is a vital dimension in the learning process.
The classroom promotes student dialogue, provides a forum for idea exchange with knowledgeable instructors, and gives students the opportunity to clarify, expand, and discuss course materials and issues.
