During the 1800's, land in the Erin Mills was mainly used for farming, scattered along the major roads. Two other communities that existed at that time were Erindale to the east, and Hamlet of Frogmore, located at the present day intersection of Dundas St. West and Winston Churchill Blvd.
Beginning in the 1950's Edward Plunkett Taylor began buying farmland for future development by Canadian Equity and Development Limited which owned Don Mills Development Corp. In 1969 Don Mills Development Corp. announced its plans to build a "New Town" in four phases. The first two phases "Erin Mills South" and "Erin Mills West" today form the Erin Mills community.
The first phase, Erin Mills South, was built in the early 70's. Also at this time the Erin Mills information pavilion was built for new buyers and residents. The services offered at the pavilion included sales, decorating advice and brochures and facilities in Mississauga. Many community groups use the pavilion for meeting rooms and staff organized picnics concerts and tours of the new subdivision.
Erin Mills West, phase 2 of the "New Town" development was completed in the mid 1980's. This area was part of the town of Oakville until 1974 when with the advent of regional government, the city of Mississauga was established and its westerly boundary extended to 9th line north of Dundas Street West. These lands then became part of Mississauga.
Today Erin Mills offers shopping facilities a university, community facilities a variety of residential dwellings, a connected open space system and employment opportunities.
